Since the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government collapsed as a result of a vertical split in the Shiv Sena, this would be the first direct election campaign between the BJP and the Thackeray faction of the Sena. On Thursday, the BJP and the Shinde faction made a last-minute decision to field a BJP candidate rather than one from the Shinde-led “Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena.” Minutes before the nomination period was about to expire, Patel’s nomination was formally announced.

The candidates who are still in the race are Rutuja Ramesh Latke (of the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Balasahed Thackeray), Milind Kashinath Kamble (of the Independents), Neena Ganpat Khedekar (also of the Independents), Sandesh Sadanand Jadhav (of the People’s Party of India (Democratic)), Rajesh Ramdular Tripathi (of the Uttar Bharti (People).
