East Fort foot overbridge in Thiruvananthapuram will open in the last week of December.

East Fort foot-over bridge is scheduled to open in the last week of December. According to Mayor S Arya Rajendran, the overbridge construction is 90% complete, with only minor finishing touches remaining. The skywalk has a lift to assist the elderly and differently-abled in crossing the busy stretch.

East Fort foot over bridge was built in such a way that it does not detract from the East Fort’s rich history. The archaeology department intervened several times, causing the project to be delayed. The department suggested changing the skywalk’s design, claiming that it would detract from East Fort’s traditional appearance. The Rs 2.75-crore foot over bridge project was started by the corporation two years ago.

Former Public Works Minister G Sudhakaran announced it in June 2019 with much fanfare, and the project’s deadline was set for March 2020. The project was delayed due to the pandemic and suggestions from the archaeology department.

The city corporation and Sun Infrastructure Private Ltd have formed a public-private partnership to carry out the project. In exchange for permission to use the space for their advertisement, the company will cover the cost of the project and its maintenance as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

The Kerala Road Fund Board; on the other hand, had insisted on keeping complete control of the bridge after it was built. Because East Fort is a historic site, the company has been denied permission to post advertisements.

There had been a lot of accidents at East Fort because of the heavy traffic and the lack of a proper walkway; with 16 deaths recorded in three years. The nearby Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Cotton Hill, and St Mary’s Higher Secondary School; Pattom, both opened their foot over bridges, providing huge relief to pedestrians.
