Bird race in Thiruvananthapuram 2021, eight teams are investigating bird diversity. They had identified 152 species of birds from eight locations in and around Thiruvananthapuram.

Birders who visited the Bonacaud forests, Agrippa forests, Kallar-Ponmudi forests, and Palode forests. They had even visited Akkulam-Veli wetland complex, Punchakkari wetlands, Kottoor forests, and the bird-rich areas of the city on Sunday saw rare birds such as the chestnut-winged cuckoo, Eurasian blackbird, black baza, and orange-breasted green pigeon.

Especially Palode had the highest number of species, with 84. Ponmudi forests had 64 bird species. Agrippa had 40. Bonacaud had 44. Kottoor forests had 50. Akkulam-Veli wetland had 56, and Punchakkari wetlands had 54.

32 species were found in the city zoo compound, paddy fields near Kesavadasapuram, and the Kannammoola thou in the city.


The chief guest was Sanjayankumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, Southern Circle, Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department, Kollam. Kerala’s forests, he said, were adequately insulated. Either as protected areas or reserve forests. The biodiversity within them benefited as a result. Outside of forests, however, this was not the case, owing to the diverse habitats scattered throughout the state, such as coastal areas, water bodies, mangroves, sacred groves, and so on. He stated that volunteering for scientific research initiatives aimed at documenting biodiversity was critical for the long-term preservation of such biodiversity-rich habitats.

Although in the Thiruvananthapuram Bird Race, which is part of WWF-volunteer India’s initiative. The green partnership program of Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department’s Social Forestry Division, is now in its 15th year, according to Renjan Mathew Varghese, State Director (Kerala), WWF India. The bird race had been capable of attracting many young people to nature and birdwatching, as well as creating a cadre of bird experts in the city, by visiting birding hotspots, observing the birds, and documenting as a whole positively and negatively changes in habitat.
