AK-203 rifle Indian Army, As per a govt official, the Union has included “ to manufacture over 5 lakh AK-203 automatic weapons at Korwa, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, to strengthen the country’s military industry self-sufficiency.
The 7.62 x 39mm caliber AK-203 Rifles will now supersede the INSAS Rifle; which has been in service for nearly three generations. As per the Indian government, the AK-203 rifles will improve the Indian Army’s operational efficacy in refuting and counter-insurgency actions.
Furthermore, the project will generate business prospects for a variety of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises; and other defense industries in terms of raw materials and part supply, resulting in new job opportunities.
Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd, a special purpose joint company, will carry out the project. It was founded by the Indian companies Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEL) and Russia’s Rosoboronexport (RoE) and business Kalashnikov as well as Munitions India Limited (MIL).
“It underscores the ever-increasing fundamental change in defense purchasing from buying (global) to Make in India,” says the statement. This effort will be carried out in collaboration with Russia and shows the two nations; growing defense cooperation,” the official stated.

The AK-203 will succeed the INSAS rifle, which has been in service for more than 30 years. The Indian Armed Forces, as per estimates, require about 6.70 lakh AK-203 assault weapons to supplant the INSAS.
According to sources, AK-203 automatic weapons are “lightweight, sturdy, and easy to use new assault rifles with a mature technology that would boost the fighting capability of troops to appropriately handle current and future operational problems.”
The assault weapon will “improve the Indian Army’s operational efficacy in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency missions,” they added.
