Kerala wins simultaneously but fails to impress Bihar

Kerala registered a 4-1 win over Bihar in the 76th Santosh Trophy National Football Qualifiers at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode on Thursday. Certainly, the margin of victory might have been bigger, had the hosts not wasted the opportunities that came their way.

More than the claps and cheers, ‘this game is not enough” and “what are these guys doing?” were said by a lot of people watching the match at the stadium. Nijo Gilbert’s (24 and 28) two first half goals and a goal each by Vishak Mohanan (81) and Abdu Raheem K (85) sealed the match in favour of Kerala. Bihar’s consolation goal was scored in the 70th minute by Munna Mandi.

Even though Kerala managed to win, their inability to convert the easy chances must worry their team management. Kerala had an opportunity in the 23rd minute when Rizwan Ali got a beautiful opportunity with the only Bihar goalkeeper between him and the goal post. But Rahul Yadav, the Bihar goalkeeper, managed the faintest of touches on the ball as Rizwan Ali’s shot hit the bar. But at that time, Kerala got the breakthrough in the next minute as Nijo Gilbert broke the deadlock with a freestyle freekick. Later, after four minutes, Kerala doubled their lead from the spot as Nijo was brought down by a Bihar defender in the box. Nijo himself took the kick and scored his second goal of the match and his third of the tournament.

In the second half of the substitutions, Vishak Mohanan and Abdu Raheen K scored a goal each in the 81st and 85th minutes, respectively, to seal the game for Kerala. Kerala’s next match will be with Andhra Pradesh on January 1, 2023 and let us wait for the game to cheer.
