Kerala Health Minister Veena George says a Zika virus cluster has been discovered in Thiruvananthapuram.

What is the Zika virus? Why is Kerala witnessing a surge in cases? Is Kerala Government not taking health parameters as a priority?
Mosquitoes are the primary vectors of the Zika virus. It is a fairly mild infection that is not hazardous to most people. However, it may be more dangerous for pregnant women, as evidence suggests it causes birth abnormalities, including abnormally small heads (microcephaly).
Zika virus with the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 is just making the situation worse for Kerala. The Health government of Kerala needs to wake up and take charge of the situation.
On Wednesday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced a Zika virus cluster within a three-kilometer radius of Anayara in Thiruvananthapuram.
The health minister told a special review meeting on Wednesday that the state government was taking actions to eradicate mosquitoes, including fogging the area to prevent the spread of the disease to neighboring areas. In the aftermath of the Zika virus outbreak in Thiruvananthapuram, Government established a control room at the district medical office.
So far, Kerala has documented 23 cases of the Zika virus, all of which have originated in Thiruvananthapuram.
According to the health minister, counseling was also performed to raise public understanding about the virus and encourage people not to worry. She noted that preventive operations had been stepped up in various parts of Thiruvananthapuram.
Aside from fogging, the focus will be on eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, according to George. Mosquito breeding should not be permitted in the vicinity of homes or institutions, she said.
“Do not allow a single drop of water to remain stagnant. Mosquitoes should not be allowed to reproduce inside the house, and special precautions should be taken “According to PTI, George said.
