Higher education in Kerala, Do you think the Indian Education system is failing? Kerala’s education system is in much worse condition?
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan criticized the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government’s handling of the higher education sector on Saturday.
“Universities have nothing to do with the Chief Minister. While the state’s school system is fine, the higher education system has gone to the dogs, with even meetings made in violation of the rules” During a press conference in Delhi, Khan said.
Khan reportedly wrote to Vijayan on Friday night, stating that if the state’s higher education sector continues to deteriorate, he will resign as Chancellor of the state universities.
In his letter, the Governor cites the views of eminent figures such as Bharat Ratna awardee C.N.R.Rao and historian K.N.Panikkar on why Kerala is falling behind in education. Khan expressed his displeasure on Saturday, particularly after Kannur University’s retiring Vice Chancellor Gopinath Raveendran was given a four-year extension last month.
“After signing the order, I realized it wasn’t right, so I wrote to the Chief Minister, requesting that he pass an Ordinance allowing him to take over as Chancellor,” Khan explained.
V.D.Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition, stated that the Governor has finally become aware of the state of affairs in Kerala.
After a state Vice-Chancellor was granted an extension after reaching superannuation, the Congress and the BJP have been at odds. It happened at a time when there was a ruckus over Vijayan’s Secretary’s wife being appointed to a teaching position at Kannur University.
As a follow-up to his letter, emissaries attempted to appease Khan on Friday, when Chief Secretary V.P. Joy and later State Finance Minister K.N.Balagopal both visited him, but Khan refused to budge. Vijayan, who is presiding over his party meetings in Kannur, is expected to speak with Khan later in the day, according to reports.
